La Serreta and Today’s “One Percent”

Check out this fascinating article in the October 14 New York Times, warning of the self-destructive set-up of the “one percent”, and the policies that enable the richest Americans to accrue even more wealth, widening the income inequality gap.

I was drawn to the article by the discussion of La Serrata (the closure) in 14th century Italy. Historic studies have demonstrated that closing off access to the upper economic echelons led to the downfall of Venetian prosperity during this time.  An interesting comparison to today’s issues. Are we experiencing another form of La Serrata?
